The movements of sun and moon are uniquely different from each other. Amavasya is the no moon day as per the calendar. It is the last day of the waning phase and the first day of the waxing phase. While most Amavasya Thitis do not fall completely during nights, Darsha Amavasya is the perfect no moon night when the moon is totally absent. In other words, it is the Amavasya that is present after the sunset hours.
